Monemvasia is a powerful medieval fortress located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short 200m causeway. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period; accommodation is offered in several traditional hotels and guest-houses. The Latin form of its name “Malvasia” gave its name to Malmsey wine.
