Just a few kilometers west of modern-day Corinth, excavations have unearthed the foundations of the whole ancient Corinth city center.
It’s no accident that the ancient city was built here, beneath a solitary hill overlooking the entire flat area: the Acrocorinth fortress is ideal for controlling the narrow Isthmus passage, so it has been standing there since antiquity, playing a critical part even during the Independence War against the Ottomans in the 19th century.
